Yorgo Nikolakis has been a coach for over 16 years. After falling in love with the game of football in high school in Edmonton, Yorgo was fortunate enough to spend time with both the Edmonton Wildcats and Huskies Jr football teams as well as the University of Alberta Golden Bears.While completing his last semester at UofA Yorgo began coaching at his alma mater with the T-Birds Jr team for 2 seasons before moving to Calgary.In 2003 Yorgo began working with the Midget Hilltopper team during the league’s inaugural season where he spent a decade coaching a variety of positions while taking on special teams and defensive coordinator roles before becoming head coach in his last 3 seasons with the organization.
In addition to his 10 years coaching the Midget level in the spring, Yorgo spent time coaching 2 seasons each of Bantam and Peewee football sandwiched before and after 3 years coaching with the Calgary Jr Colts under Keith Kendal.
In 2014, with a young family at home, Yorgo has scaled back his coaching commitment to work with the Ernest Manning Griffins on a part time basis and is very excited about taking over both the Top Level Football not for profit organization and the Hilltopper Board of Directors.
In his coaching tenure, Yorgo has been involved with 6 city championship games (winning 4), appear in a provincial final, help the Jr Colts lead the nation in interceptions (while coaching defensive backs), coach in 2 Prairie Junior championship games. In addition he has lead or participated in a number of offseason camps (Calgary School of Football, Top Level and more), Bantam Selects, Summer Games, U17 & U19 National Teams, the Alberta Senior Bowl, UofC Dino prospect camps and offseason practices as well as 2 training camps with the Calgary Stampeders.With a young family, the fit leading Top Level Football’s development camps is perfect. It allows Yorgo to continue with is life’s passion of mentoring young football players, while balancing being a devoted husband, father and a career information technology
